According to North Carolina after 3pm (2020), 198,460 children and unsupervised after school. North Carolina children who are fortunate enough to take part in afterschool programs are receiving critical supports and 96% of NC parents are satisfied with their child’s after school program. Afterschool programs are: Building life skills 66%, getting help with homework 72%, engaging in STEM or computer science learning opportunities 76%. Taking part in physical activities 87%, receiving healthy snacks or meals 70%, interacting with peers and building social skills 90%. A safe environment 100%, knowledgeable and caring staff 96%. Help Parents keep their job or work additional hours 84% and Provides parents a peace of Mind 82%. Average weekly cost is $109.40, receives 6.1 hours average per week and 3.9 days per week. 35% of the children in after school are from low income households.
Cost and accessible tops the list of roadblocks to after school program participation. Lack of available programs 42%; programs are to expensive 60%; and no safe way for their child to get to and from programs 48%. With 89% of parents in favor of funding for programs that provide after school opportunities.
About Us
Dr. DuWanda S. Epps Promise Academy is a safe haven for students. Our goal is to provide array of beneficial services to ensure the safety of our students and to be an assistant to all working families. Our program provides before and after-school, weekend, and summer school academic enrichment opportunities for children attending low-performing schools to help them meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading, mathematics, and science. At-risk students not performing at grade level as demonstrated by statewide assessments or not on track to meet year-end expectations.
We offer academic enrichment in ELA and math, social and emotional learning, S.T.E.AM activities and cultural awareness, drug and violence prevention workshops, financial literacy, career development and apprenticeship. We also provide a holistic approach to family engagement and community outreach.
DDSEPA Enrichment program for ages 6-12, Monday-Thursday 4:00pm-7:30pm (space is limited) $25 registration donation is required donate at the bottom of page. DDSEPA back packs are available for all enrollees "We SOAR"
